About The Author: “The Rev. Dr. Lynn Harold Hough, was a prominent Methodist clergyman and educator, widely known for his preaching and his scholarship, particularly in the field of Christian humanism He was the author of this and many other books on the subject, including “The Dignity of Man”, “Great Humanists”, and “Vital Control.”

He retired in 1947 from Drew Theological Seminary, where he had been a professor since 1930 and dean since 1934. He also had served from 1936 to 1948 as a member of the executive committee of the National Council of Churches of Christ in America.

Dr. Hough was born in Ohio in September of 1877.
He earned an A.B. at Scio College in 1898, a B.D. from Drew, which is now Drew University, in 1905, did postgraduate work at New York University and earned a D.D. from Garrett Biblical Institute in 1918.
Over the years he received many additional degrees, Th.D. from Drew, a Litt.D. from Allegheny College, an I.L.D. from Albion College, and L.H.D, from the University of Vermont, a D.D. from Wesleyan University and a J.U.D. from Boston University among them.

He was especially proud of an honorary degree from the University of Detroit, a Roman Catholic institution, because of the strong stand he took in the pulpit against the Ku Klux Klan.

From 1898 to 1914, Dr. Hough held pastorates in churches in New Jersey, New York, Brooklyn and Baltimore, and then went to the Garrett Institute for five years as professor of theology. He served a year, 1919‐20, as president of Northwestern University and then spent eight years, 1920‐28, as pastor of Central Methodist Episcopal Church in Detroit. Two years as pastor of the American Presbyterian Church in Montreal followed and then, in 1930, he went to Drew as professor of homiletics and Christian criticism of life.

He stirred some controversy in 1927 when he was rejected as a candidate for re‐election as a delegate of
the General Assembly. Dr. Hough, then pastor of the Central Church in Detroit, had written an article favoring “a Catholic” for the Presidency of the United States. He did not mention a name but it was taken to be an endorsement of Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York.

Dr. Hough was a 33d degree Mason and a member of Knights Templar.

His clubs included the Cliff Dwellers in Chicago, the Century, University, Quill and Andiron in New York and the National Liberal and Authors in London. He had served a term as president of Quill and 2024 Andiron.

Some of his other books included “The Great Argument,” “Interpretation of the Book of Revelation,” “The Eternal and Redeeming Word” and “The Living Church.”.”
