1777 The Poetical Works of John Gay: Including His Fables In Three Volumes With The Life Of The Author 2024 Published by Apollo by the Martins - Edinburg 3.5” x 5” x .75” The book is in really good condition! It's 245 years old. It has wear and cracking of leather cover. The front endpage has some names. There is minimal discoloration and spotting considering age. A member of an ancient but impoverished Devonshire family; John Gay (1685 – 1732) was an English poet and dramatist and member of the Scriblerus Club (a group of Tory writers along with his friend Alexander Pope). He is buried in Westminster Abbey. The epitaph on his tomb is by Pope, and is followed by Gay's own mocking couplet: Life is a jest, and all things show it, I thought so once, but now I know it. Gay is chiefly remembered as the author of The Beggar's Opera, a work distinguished by good-humoured satire. I have tons of rare books! Come see and follow my antique and collectibles store. ☺️.
