Esterbrook, America's Original Pen Company was established in 1858. This countertop display held the steel nibs produced by the company. Originally, there slant front of the display had a paper chart showcasing all the nibs offered, but it is missing. The nibs were stored in the back drawers of the piece. The top drawer no longer has a bottom, but the bottom drawer is complete. The logo is barely visible on the top of the box, Esterbrook Since 1858 and the bottom front reads, Renew-Points for Esterbrook Fountain Pens. I believe the wood is oak. It's an interesting piece and can be repurposed for storage.
