Both shells are about 5.8 inches x 4 inches (14.5 x 10 cms), and have 6 original holes.
Paua is an oval flattened shellfish found only in New Zealand waters.
It clings to rocks below the lowest spring tide.
The shell grows to about 8 inches (200 mm) long, is gathered by fishermen, and it's meat is sold as a food delicacy.
Valued by the Maori people for its inlay use in traditional carving.
Today the shell's opalescent blues and greens are used for ornamental and jewelry products
They are also perfect for holding smudge sticks, crystals, incense holder, potpourri or as home décor, traditionally 2024 used for smudging & cleansing negative energy.
