The beginning of my painting process is intuitional and improvisational it is inspired by the layered fragments of posters, graffiti and peeling paint I see on buildings and in alleys around the city.
I start by randomly placing found images, text materials and paint on the surface, this allows me to build texture, color and structure to the backgrounds. And much like the posters and graffiti I see around the city, it illustrates the passage of time or the struggle between old and new, past and present.
The way the figures are treated in this work are inspired by stickers and stencils. I manipulate my photographs of pedestrians in photo shop to create a black image which eliminates details and creates anonymity. Seen from a birds eye perspective, the figures feel under surveillance and I am playing with the ideas of connection/disconnection, random/deliberate, intent/accident, or that people are being pulled towards something they can't control.
