The Meditations, Thoughts or Himself (in Greek, Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν, Tà eis heautón, literally 'things for himself') of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius is a literary work made up of a series of reflections by this philosopher. It was originally written in Greek between the years 170 and 180.

In the middle of the fourth century, Julian the Apostate and the orator Themistius mention with approval and praise the personality of Marcus Aurelius. Themistios, in his panegyric on Valens, entitled Brotherly Love or On Humanity, finds the first reference to Marcus Aurelius' writing under the express title of "Marcus's Admonitions" (Márkou parengélmata).2 Avidius Cassius's biographer in History Augusta refers to some "exhortations" that Marcus Aurelius would have made days before leaving to go to war with the Marcomanni. However, according to García Gual, after that and until the 9th century there are no mentions of the writings of Marcus Aurelius.
The first direct mention of the work appears in the 10th century. The Byzantine Archbishop Aretas of Caesarea, a great collector of manuscripts and profane books, writes a letter to Archbishop Demetrius of Heracleia expressing: "For some time now I have had an ancient copy of the most profitable of Emperor Marcus, so ancient that it is falling to pieces... This I have copied, and I can pass it on to posterity in its new dress".

Some modern authors consider that the first of these books, written in Granua (the current Hron river in Slovakia), constitutes a kind of inner testament, where Marcus Aurelius remembers all the important people in his life in autobiographical form, perhaps datable around the year 179, shortly before his death.
Book II, written in Carnuntum, also supposedly of late date, could have been written in the year 178 and, more importantly, represents the common thread for a possible chronological interpretation of the work. In this case it would be too easy, although possible, to think of a chronology in which the first of the books is datable in 179 and the last in 168, shortly after the death of the friend and teacher Marco Cornelius Fronto.
The authentic unity of the work, which in the opinion of some scholars appears as a kind of set of thoughts, with no apparent concatenation between the numerous reflections, is found in the author's spiritual attitude when observing life and earthly things, in a vision broader 2024, outside of time, outside of the contemporary events that surrounded it.
Books from II to XII contain meditations on the human condition, life, death, the universe, creation, morality, fortune, the values in which people should be inspired.
