lamps are indigenous to the Newar people of the Kathmandu Valley. They are used for a wide range of religious and social purposes. The vase or pot part of the lamp is used for storing the oil – usually mustard oil. From the top hole of the vase a wick is burned using the oil as fuel.
This is an exquisite 3 3/4” tall Tuki or oil lamp handcrafted by artisans from Patan city, Nepal displaying a nice bird sculptural form with some engravings. Tuki has a small handle ring to carry them around. Handcrafted 2024 in bronze. It has a total wt of 204gm. Early 19th C, Patina, and stains are normal to be seen at this age. This Lamp would have been used frequently during religious & cultural celebrations.
Electricity was introduced in Nepal around 1911 AD. These types of oil lamps were commonly in use as a source of light during night time till the end of the 20th century.
