The lower part is unglazed, showing the lovely red earthenware fabric, the roots and trunk of the tree starts here and its branches flourishes against the main body of the jug which is glazed in a contrasting cream colour, two branches trail off along the jug's handle. The jug is completely symmetrical with a tree captured on each side.
The piece is painted with the ceramicists name on the base E(erring) & K(arin) HEERWAGEN, DANMARK and the date of creation, 1985.
The couple are still producing ceramics to this day, right up on the northern tip of the long strip of island called Langeland or 'Long Land' in southern Denmark. Near the small seaside village of Hou, Karin and Erling Heerwagen have created their own little ceramic universe -a studio and gallery space where you can view and purchase their wonderful creations which include imaginative figures, mugs, jars and dishes.
