I created this state of Illinois collage by upcycling 5 different vintage beer cans from or relating to Illinois. The wooden base is a board taken from an antique Atlas Brewing of Chicago beer bottle shipping crate. A sawtooth hanger is attached to the back. To reinforce this board I attached slats to the back from the same shipping crate. When hung this piece will be slightly raised off the wall. Some nice color in this one and lots of character in the base board. I love the Alps and Van Merritt beer can designs.
An ideal gift for the Illinoisan, beer lover, mancanve owner or recycling enthusiast!

I use only vintage American steel and aluminum beer cans and antique American beer bottle shipping crates when creating my map pieces. I cut apart the cans and flatten them down to the wood using a strong bonding glue. I completely flatten the metal pieces so there are no sharp sides sticking up. I polish the metal, but some of the cans naturally show small scratches, fading, or spotting. Although I make every effort to avoid sharp metal edges, caution should still be used when handling this product.
I take the crates apart 2024 to create the bases for my pieces. Since the crates were actually used for years, they show normal wear like fading text, knot holes, cracks, etc. They are all still sturdy and solid however. I try to take out most of the nails and metal stripping and sand down the rough spots. Sometimes, if necessary, I reinforce the back of the board with wooden slats taken from beer crates.
