Antique Edwardian White Ironstone Scale Plate | Large Sized Day & 2024 Millward Birmingham Scale Plate | Cheese Board or Butter Slab Dish
A nice example of a large sized Edwardian ironstone scale plate, dating from the early 1900s.
This white ironstone plate is a wonderful example produced by renowned scale manufacturers, Day & Millward of Birmingham. As well as featuring advertising for the firm, with "DAY & MILLWARD. PATENTEES. LONDON & BIRMINGHAM" in fabulous black transfer print typography at the base, the scale plate is very ornate with the Lady Justice and the “Justitia Virtutum Regina” logo also featuring prominently.
These ironstone plates are great for serving cheese or butter on in the modern kitchen as the ironstone keeps them cool.
This scale plate is in fair condition for its age. Although the under glaze transfer logo has faded in places, it is still quite clear. There are a number of areas of light staining and wear on both sides of the plate, including surface scratches. This is a result of daily use in a shop at the time it was produced. The edges are worn and have some minor dents to them too from where they would have rubbed against the scale fittings.
However, overall there are no cracks or significant chips and this is a rarely seen quality and heavy piece of antique kitchenalia.
