Alfredo Barbini Murano Glass Bowl, Silver Foil Bowl, Red Barbini Glass Bowl, Mid Century Italian Art Glass, Barbini Fume Bowl, Silver Fume

This listing is for a lovely vintage Murano art glass bowl or ashtray. This blown and hand shaped glass bowl was made on the island of Murano, near Venice, Italy most likely in the 1960's. The bowl is not marked but is similar to the work of the well-known Venetian artist, Alfredo Barbini. The bowl was created with cherry red glass that was applied with a silver leaf "aventurine". The glass bowl was then encased in clear glass. The bottom of the bowl shows the "pontil" mark where the steel blowing rod was attached to the glass. This has been ground and polished smooth indicating superior workmanship. The little bowl/ashtray weighs just over 1 pound and measures approximately 4-3/8 inches in diameter and stands 2 inches high. The bowl is in very good used vintage condition with respect to age and use with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There are some light surface marks and some shelf wear and scratches on the bottom. This is a really pretty colorful piece of vintage Murano art glass possibly from a famous glass studio that would make a nice addition to your collection.

Alfredo Barbini was born in 1912 in Venice, Italy. He began learning the art of glass making in Murano at the early age of ten, at Abate Zanetti, the design school attached to the Murano Glass museum. He then went on to work for Ferro Toso, Cristalleria Murano, Zecchin-Martinuzzi, Seguso Vetri'dArte and Vetri Artistici Muranesi Societa Anonima and was recognized as a Maestro before he was 20 years old. In 1946 he became a partner at Cenedese, and then began Barbini Glassworks in 1950. Barbini has become renowned for his heavy, thick sculptural forms which have won him many awards. In 1952 Alfredo's daugher Oceania Barbini-Moretti joined the glassworks and is now the company's sales manager. His son Flavio became a designer for the firm in 1968. Barbini died on February 13, 2007 in Venice, Italy.
