These black and gold hoop earrings are hand forged using the anticlastic raising technique. I hand-cut a strip of solid sterling 2024 silver from a flat sheet, then fuse 14K gold on the surface. The fusing process results in a gold - splashes, painterly effect. The pattern of the gold splashes is unique to each earring. After fusing the gold, I hammer the hoops multiple rounds around steel hooks of various sizes, which results in the metal curving along two axes, in a spiraled hoop. Finally, I solder and curve the silver ear wires, then oxidize the earrings black, to set off the gold, and polish them with a specialized wax to preserve the black oxidation.
The earrings in the pictures are 1.5" in diameter. Multiple sizes are available during check-out - please contact me if you'd like a size not listed.
The multiple hammering process, and the curving along 2 axes hardens and permanently shapes the metal, therefore there is no need to use a heavy, thick metal sheet. Even in a large size, these earrings are very sturdy, yet lightweight and easy to wear.
