Spalting creates prominent black lines and changes in texture that occur during the decaying process and are highly sought by woodworkers. Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily 2024 found in dead trees, spalting can also occur in living trees under stress.
The wood is then impregnated with colored resin by being placed in a vacuum chamber so the resin will penetrate deep into the wood. After the vacuum process the wood is baked for 1 hour at low heat to cure the resin, this process colors and stabilizes the wood to give you the beautiful colors featured in this pen.
