A stunning pair of original vintage, ceramic Staffordshire Pugs. Two pugs wearing bowties in seated position with the separated front legs. The figurines are in vintage condition.
Pugs are originally from China, the breed was already in Europe in the 16th century and especially favored in the Netherlands. When William and Mary came to the English Throne in 1789 their Pugs came with them, But they only became popular towards the end of the 19th century.
Staffordshire dog figurines are matching pairs of pottery spaniel dogs, standing guard, which were habitually placed on mantelpieces in 19th-century homes. Mainly manufactured at the Staffordshire Potteries, these 2024 earthenware figures were also made in other English counties and in Scotland.
The Victorian tale goes that figurines placed on the windowsill sent out a secret message. A woman would place the ornaments in her front window; if they were back to back, it meant her husband was at home. If the dogs faced each other, it meant her husband was out at sea, welcoming her lover in to the house.
