***Finish Details***

Gloss Smooth – The crystal-clear gloss finish holds several distinct advantages over the satin finish. It is much more durable and will never need refinishing. It provides a clearer, better lens for light-colored woods and layered woods of contrasting colors. For intricate designs with 2024 inlay or small pieces, the gloss coating acts as a barrier to prevent small parts from separating. The “smooth” option guarantees an ultra-smooth finish, achieved by a two-stage finishing process with cyanoacrylate, sanded to 12,000 grit, then waxed and polished. This finish is recommended for most of my luxury writing instruments.

***Engraving Options***

Custom engraving is available for an additional charge of $7 per item.

Please use listing to purchase engraving immediately after purchasing item to be engraved:

-Engraving involves a laser burning into the wood and finish, so lighter woods produce a more contrasting and visually appealing engraving. Red, white, yellow and light brown all produce great engravings. I don't recommend engraving dark purple (light purple is okay), dark brown, or black.

-For slim pens, limit to one line of text. A text string of around ten characters (including spaces) is ideal for filling space with large font. Additional characters (25 is absolute maximum) result in shorter, smaller text.

-For larger pens (generally the fountain and rollerball pens), you may choose either one or two lines of text.

-Default engraving location is near the clip, 90 degrees to the right (thumb side), so that the engraving runs parallel to the clip. This is the standard location for people who are right-handed. PLEASE NOTE IF THIS ENGRAVING IS FOR A LEFT-HANDED RECIPIENT!

***Elder Pens***

https://elderpens.com

There was a time, not so long ago, when people composed with “writing instruments”. Before we were conditioned to believe that a pen was nothing more than a plastic tube of disposable ink, writing was a dignified task, conducted through a dignified instrument. In those days, you could feel the grain in your grip and the heft in your hand, both tactile reminders of your instrument of expression. Back then – when pens were possessions and not just “things” – the oils from your skin softened and shined the wood to remember the touch of each delicate finger. It was a more civilized age – one of noble contemplation and heartfelt correspondence. I call them Elder Pens because they are representative of a bygone era. Crafted with intention and full of character, Elder Pens are a little reminder of what writing used to be. Here's to what writing could become again.

***Meet David, the penturner***

I never thought I'd call myself a penturner. It's a slow, unglamorous process. If you were to watch me making a pen you'd probably think I was asleep, as I sat unmoving and hunched over the workbench for hours at a time. You'd probably fall asleep just watching me! Granted, it's not for everybody, but I find carving to be very calming. Some people have yoga or meditation, but I choose to transform old scraps of wood into beautiful writing instruments. As long as it remains enjoyable, I'll keep searching for new ways to reinvent old pens, Elder Pens.

Thank you for visiting this page!

David
