Story:
What if…?* we made a very warm, thick and “fleshy”, wide scarf, that would be a great protection in the coldest times, and at the same time related with its design to the popular tweed fabrics? Such design requires using a more advanced weave – we chose the classic herringbone. As usual, we began from creating the warp, this time we used thicker soft acrylic thread in black, grey and white. We placed the 188 threads of the warp in four harnesses, creating conditions to make the chosen weave. For the woof we have chosen woollen-acrylic melange Cheval Blanc yarn in beautiful beige, brown, grey and lime tones.
The dimensions 2024 of the scarf are: width 43 cm, length 137,5 cm with a short fringe. The scarf was made in one unique copy only.
For Tender December Slow Design is a process of careful designing and meticulous fabrication of unique objects. See how the scarf was made: http://tenderdecember.eu/otulacze-2/very-warm-herringbone-scarf-cieply-szalik-w-jodelke/
* Everything starts with a “WHAT IF…?”. This first, sudden idea stalks you until you finally give it some thought. Then you think, visualise and manupulate your idea; try to look into every nook and cranny. “To do, or not to do…?”. Then you sketch, trace out the details, set the measurements. Then you make your first attempt, draw conclusions, modify and refine your project. Finally, you search, match, try out, try on. Then you order, buy, collect, try out again. You check other possibilities, buy again, try out again. You gather. And plan. And finally there comes a day when you begin… Depending on the plan: you sew, spin, weave, embroider. Or you cut, sand, solder… Piece by piece, inch after inch, thousands tiny beads sewn one after another, yards of yarn forced into cooperation, fractions of inches sanded to metallic dust. Sometimes you botch up. Then you curse… and start over. You turn on the lights when it's getting darker only to turn it off again just a „moment” later, when the birds are welcoming a new day right behind the window. And then another. And yet another. Just before going to bed you think of new steps, a plan for the next day, you set out goals, as every second is at a premium. You think about the user. Will they understand? Will they look closely? Will they slide their fingers to feel the tiniest of detail? Will they notice the place where your needle lost the epic battle with a stubborn bead? Or the place where the warp thread broke and left your work in question. Will they feel? Will they understand? You give your work last finishing touches and there it is. It is made and it is done. The only thing left is to take a picture that is a crowning touch to your work. A few lines of description and you can finally take a well-earned rest. You can start answering your phone again, check what time of the year it happens to be, pet your dog… But whether you like it, or not, there is a new small “What if…?” sprouting in your head.
