------
In November, 1903, Beatrix Potter spent a holiday at Hastings, a seaside town in Britain, and while there she wrote The Tale of Tuppenny, which later, in a slightly different form, became the first chapter of The Fairy Caravan. It is a delightful story about a guinea-pig who was “quite a miserable object because most of his hair had been pulled out.” The barber's Quintessence of Abyssinian Artichoke hair-wash grew Tuppenny such a head of hair as had never been seen.
The Pigmy Elephant is really Paddy Pig. When not dressed as a clown in spotty calico or dancing a jig, Paddy is bedecked with two white sticks for tusks and a black stocking stuffed with moss as his trunk. With Princess Xarifa (the dormouse) firmly ensconced in the howdah on his back, Paddy's performance as the Pigmy Elephant is a great success until four piglets in the audience decide that “There is something funny about that elephant!"
The Tale of the Faithful Dove is a change of pace. In Miss Potter's own words, “... The story is sentimental, not comic.” The faithful dove is Tom Tidler. While trying to out-fly a predatory falcon, Tom's wife, Amabella, flies into an unused chimney and is imprisoned there. Tom exhibits the tenacious fidelity characteristic of doves by supplying Amabella with corn and moral support. Amabella is kept busy by successfully hatching her egg into a fledgling she names Toby. Finally they are rescued! – This plot would seem contrived except that The Tale of the Faithful Dove is a true story.
The Sly Old Cat is the intriguing tale of a cat who gives a tea party to a rat. Before long Mr. Rat begins to fear that it is he who is to become the dessert course! The ensuing adventure, in which Mr. Rat evades the fate planned for him by the sly old cat, typifies the gentle excitement and humor common to so much of Beatrix Potter's work. What is the secret of Beatrix Potter's success? Why has her work endured the test of time when so many of the highly acclaimed children's books of prior years are now gone and forgotten? Of course it is impossible to dissect her art and examine it under a glass; it's also too easy to merely say that her many tales manifest the love and understanding she held for children. Perhaps though, we can say that her magic emanates from one simple – though hard to imitate – ability . . . She wrote to children, not for them.
