Spectacular large format map of El Salvador, published in Paris by Erhard Freres.

The present map is the first truly large format map of El Salvador, preceded only by a smaller pocket map by Maximillian von Sonnenstern and lithographed by G. Kraetzer in New York in 1858 and 1859 ( Mapa general de la republica de Salvador / levantado por Maxmilian v. Sonnenstern por orden de su excelencia Sr. Don Rafael Campo 1859).

G. J. Dawson was apparently the U.S. Vice Consul to El Salvador or about the time of the creation of this map. The map was accompanied by a 72 page book entitled Geografia del Salvador, also published in Paris in 1890.

This map was drawn up by G. J. Dawson in San Salvador in 1887 under the direction of Consul General E. Pector and published in Paris by Erhard Freres. The map gives an important list of makers and documents consulted in the creation of the map. In other words, Dawson not only used maps from cartographers in the service of the Honduran Government such as Byrne and the Government of El Salvador such as Sonnenstern 2024, but also from independent cartographers such as Squier. But the mention of Barberena among the mapmakers consulted of Barberena or of official services such as the Ministry of External Relations suggests that the depiction of the boundary on this map is in conformity with the claims of El Salvador during the negotiations which took place at La Union in 1888, during which the Salvadorian delegates proposed, since there is no controversy over the border, [that the border be set as] the course of the Rio Goascoran from its mouth at Union Bay, the Gulf of Fonseca, upstream, until its confluence with Rio Gajiniqui or Pescado.
