"The Kunzite is the pink-violet sister of the yellow-green hiddenite, another specimen of the spodumene family. Kunzite is strongly pleochroic, i.e. there is a variation in the intensity of the color of a crystal when it is perceived in different directions. The top and bottom of the crystal reveal the deepest of colors. Kunzite is very difficult to cut to make the light pass through the gemstone and accentuate the desired color."
Purple-pink spodumene is usually very pale but 2024 can sometimes be vivid and intense. Its color is due to manganese. Like hiddenite, some Kunzite specimens may have a color that fades if exposed to strong light.

The Kunzite is named after George F. Kunz, the legendary American mineralogist and buyer for Tiffany & Co, who first described the jewel in 1902.
