Tourmaline is the most colorful of all gemstones. It occurs in all colors - pink, red, green, blue, and multicolored are the most well-known. Scientifically, tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals related in their physical and chemical properties. The mineral Elbaite is the member of the Tourmaline group that is responsible for almost all the gem varieties.

For centuries, various cultures have had different beliefs about what virtues tourmaline can bring to the wearer. Some consider this stone to be helpful to artists, authors, actors and those in creative fields. Others once used it as a stone to awaken one from “the dream of illusion.” Ancient ceremonies in India included tourmaline as a tool to bring insight and help in the discovery of that which is good; it would also serve to make known who or what was the cause of troubles or evil deeds. The gem was also highly valued by alchemists who, perhaps because of it's pyroelectric effect, believed it to be related to the philosopher's stone.

Tourmaline has been said to be good for keeping the digestive system healthy as well as strengthening teeth and bones. It is also recommended for adrenal disorders and is used by modern practitioners to treat stress and trauma.
