Artist Statement
My artistic exploration perhaps began at the age of four with my great grandmother Belen. We would stack pieces of wood, combining them with stones, or simply string flowers together, considering their shape, size, color and texture. For me it was a marvel, contemplating posters or calendars, the colors of nearby houses and naturally the colors and materials in the crafts sold in the local markets.
During that time I would also listen intently to the essays my mother read by my great uncle Alfonso Reyes. These transported me to the world full of color, suspense and harmony, such that at night my mind couldn't stop thinking and recreating the occasional heavy magical atmospheres of them. My childhood was 2024 splendid I grew up among composers, singers, dancers and lovers of "la vie Boheme."
Years after, I attended schools with regular curricula that left me bored and poisoned. However, I always found a moment to explore or do things to free myself from the institutional tedium. My mind couldn't stop observing, creating and recreating my environment. Many years later I relied on the support of great teachers in the cultural and artistic field, whom I name with with respect and esteem: Ernesto Minakata (watercolorsist and Sumi-e teacher), Rosa Luz Villasuso de Marroquin (Gestalt perceptual designer), Sofia Letelier (Chilean architect), Othon Salazar y Jesus Sanchez Urbina (engravers/block printers) and the painters Teresa Palau, Teresa Caballero, and Angelica Villarreal.
My love of space, form and color is inherent-- the result of a Mexico full of tradition, folklore and a unique cultural fusion.
