1950's Notre-Dame de l'Epine Enamel Brooch
Made by Arthus Bertrand, a maker of medals and decorations founded in Paris in 1803 by Claude Arthus-Bertrand. He was an army officer during the French Revolution who obviously had a penchant for ornamentation.
The brooch is made of gilded brass with blue enamel and a centred silver plaque depicting the Virgin holding the Child Jesus

Arthus-Bertrand has had many distinguished clients to include the French government. It is the official manufacturer of the French Legion of Honor and created the insignia for the Society of the Cincinnati and the Order of Lafayette**
