This ceramic bird was made in the 60s or 70s by UTCTI of Japan. It was part of a line of ceramic figures and candleholders made of the same speckley brown clay and cray and cream glazes with pale gold accents---but this bird is in a different class design-wise, in my opinion! There is some real artistry here---the proportions, the graceful curves, the use of color. I'm seriously trying to not talk myself into keeping it!
It reminds me a lot of the birds designed by Sanna Anukka, a Finnish-British artist---and of Lisa Larsen's work.
It's a candleholder, I guess--there's no socket, just a hole. I'm 2024 showing it with a 1/2" taper. I like it just as a figurine, though.
Condition is perfect. No cracks, chips or repairs.
Just under 5" high to the top of the head
