DIY Natural Dye Kit and Cotton Scarf. Plant-based dyeing with all tools, ingredients, instructions included. Sustainable zero-waste craft. By Charlie Darwin Textiles.

This is a natural dye kit that includes a super-snuggly-soft and lightweight cotton gauze scarf, plus all the ingredients, tools, and instructions you'll need to experiment with textile dyeing using pigments from plants! We are proud to offer the most supply-inclusive and zero-waste natural dye kit on the market.

So let's talk details:

The Black Bean Dye Kit includes:

• 1 scarf, 74"x22" in 100% cotton gauze (lightweight)
• Detailed instruction manual for natural dyeing (including binding and knotting techniques)
• 16oz of black beans
• Soda ash (for scouring the fabric)
• Alum acetate mordant
• Calcium carbonate
• Wooden spoon
• Wooden stirring sticks
• Recyclable paper cups
• 1 rubber glove
• 3 test tubes and linen holster

(Soda ash, alum acetate, and calcium carbonate are premeasured according to the dry weight of the scarf (100g))

Black bean dyeing does not use heat. The process will take you a couple of hours spread out over ~4days.

You will need to supply your own:

(1) 3-gallon container (bucket, or 2024 bin... anything around this size that can contain liquid)
(1) 1-gallon container (old coffee tub, milk jug with the top cut off, large Tupperware, etc).

Why would I want to try a dye kit? Who is this for?

Treat yourself to learn a new skill! Become apart of the process of the slow fashion movement.
Or give as a gift. Great for fashion enthusiasts, artists, crafters, and anyone wanting to form a better relationship with their clothes and the Earth.

Environmentally-conscious, zero-waste features of our kit:

• The test tubes that contain the mordants are sent with a handmade linen holster that hangs up on the wall! Use this new decoration to propagate plants or as a flower vase.
• The wooden spoon and stirring rods can be saved and reused for gardening, other crafts, etc. (but due to their contact with the mordants, we don't recommend you use them for any food later!)
• The beans will come in a hand-sewn cotton drawstring bag. Reuse this to hold produce or whatever needs holding.
• Beans can be composted (but we don't really recommend you eat them).
Items are shipped in eco-conscious packaging.

Garment Care Instructions:

For longest-lasting wear, we recommend you hand wash and hang dry your scarf after you've dyed it. To preserve the natural dye color, please do not dry or store in direct sunlight or near harsh heat. Do not iron.
