This is the book that helped bring down the Soviet empire. Solzhenitsyn, a former prisoner of a Soviet forced labor camp, wanted to print his book first in the USSR, but after the KGB confiscated one of the copies of the text from his typist, who killed herself on release, he agreed to its publication in the West.

Published in 1974 Harper & Row, Publishers, New York, Evanston, San Francisco, London. This is the first Book Club Edition published alongside the first American edition. Hardcover with dust jacket. 660 pages + i-xii front matter.

Book is Near Fine. Black cloth covered boards with gilt titles on spine, a blind stamped Harper & Row colophon on front cover and a blind stamped square on the bottom back of spine indicating it is a BCE. Binding is tight. Pages are clean and 2024 unmarked. There are a few marks on the outer edges of the text block.
Dust jacket is Good. There are tears as visible in photos.
