Gorgeous thick textured wool with a curly lamb mouton or poodle weave that was likely sewn originally as a carriage blanket for chilly nights judging by its dimensions. Would make a perfect stadium lap blanket today! I am not sure of the age, but certainly made prior to the 1930s.
The solid black fabric is without any fading or damage. The piece is two layers of 2024 this fabric sewn together which gives the piece quite a bit of heft. If so desired, there is quite a lot of fabric here with which new garments could be constructed such as a coat or jacket, or accessories such as hats and handbags, or even pillows! Counting the two layers, it equates to almost 4 yards of 47" wide wool yardage.
Excellent condition, has been well stored for many years. There is no wear at all within the body of the piece, and I only see slight wear at the seam edges and corners where the fabric nap either was intentionally removed to allow for ease of sewing or it may have worn slightly, or it may simply be the selvedge edge -- though none of this is seen unless you are closely inspecting the piece at the very edges. I believe this was how it was made originally so the thickness of the fabric would not be in the way of stitching.
Measurements:
Length: 69"
Width: 47"
Almost 4 yards of 47" wide fabric if using to make new items.
For sizing perspective, this will easily fit across at the foot of a Queen bed which is 60" across. Also will cover the top of a Twin bed which is 38" wide by 75" long.
Would also make a splendid throw for your sofa or couch or use to keep your legs warm outdoors at a football game. See 3rd photo of piece in a "natural" crumpled state for best representation of color, texture and drape. Black is a very difficult color to photograph!
