Japan Style by Mitsukuni Yoshida, First Edition 1980 Published by Kodansha, Vintage Japan Decor Book, Vintage Japanese Design 2024 Book
From the inside dust jacket:
Stereotypes about Japan abound, and these are usually distorted or contradictory. For example, the Japanese are commonly thought to be aggressive and passive, arrogant and humble, materialistic and ascetic, boorish and polite, xenophobic and hospitable, westernised and inscrutably ori****l.
Such dualisms do in fact reflect very real aspects of Japanese society and its mentality. But their place in the overall framework is little understood, since Japan has remained remote from the West culturally as well as geographically.
To help remedy this, an exhibition held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 1980 aimed at providing 2024 an experience of Japanese objects in their social and cultural context. This, the book that complemented the exhibition, gives a taste of the complexity of Japanese life and reveals the variety of its material culture.
