W M Welch Chicago, the Welch Scientific Company. 1960'S weather gauge with wind spinner and compass. Measures 11 3/4" tall, wood base is 6" x 4" and sits 7/8" high. Weight is nice at 14 oz. Wind spinner top is removable.
Good old condition with black paint peeling off so needs new paint. tarnishing to metal, handling marks, scuffs, scratches and still looks great! Compass looks like its working and wind gauged spins nicely also. Previous owner used it for a jewelry tree but sure you can find many unusual uses for this unusual piece.

W M Welch founded his company in 1880 in Maquoketa, Iowa. In 1906 the company moved to Chicago and was incorporated as the W M Welch Manufacturing Company. In 1960 the name was changed to Welch Scientific Company. In 1968, Welch merged with the E H Sargent Company (founded in 1852) and changed the name to Sargent-Welch Scientific Company. In 1989 the Welch Manufacturing Division was sold to VWR International LLC. The company continues to operate today as a supplier of science education supplies. Not to be confused with Welch Allyn, which is a totally different company.
