Her work focuses on issues such as oppression, feminism, race and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. She is the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017. She read her poem at Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony on January 20, 2021, and is the youngest poet to read at a presidential inauguration.
